Know Your Coverage Before the Summer Storms Hit

ImageHandlerIt’s time to prepare for summer storms.

Most home insurance policies generally cover a range of potential disasters, from tornadoes and windstorms, to fire and lightning strikes, but there are few that are not covered, unless you specifically add the coverage.

According to the National Climatic Data Center, the U.S. experienced 11 billion-dollar disasters in 2012. These severe storms affected nearly every region of the country. All of these events serve as important reminders that disasters can strike anytime, anywhere.

Are You Protected?
Some options that you may want to consider to help protect your home and everything in it:

•Flood insurance. Flood insurance coverage is excluded from most homeowners policies and must be purchased as a separate policy. Many homeowners are unaware they are at risk for flooding, but in fact, 25 percent of all flood losses occur in low-risk areas, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Flood insurance is available for renters as well as homeowners. Erie Insurance offers flood coverage through American Bankers Insurance. There is a 30-day waiting period before the coverage takes effect.
•Earthquake insurance. Like flood insurance, homeowners policies typically don’t include earthquake insurance, but it can be purchased as an optional endorsement or added coverage to your home insurance policy.
•Sewer or drain water back-up. Sewer or drain backups or the inability of sump pumps to handle runoff water from major downpours are not covered under a typical homeowners insurance policy. This type of coverage must be purchased as an endorsement to a homeowners policy.

It’s a good idea to look at all of the risks your home could face and make sure you have the proper protection if something were to happen. Before the summer storms strike, review your insurance policy to make sure you have sufficient coverage. Contact our agency today.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: I HAVE A CRACK IN MY WINDSHIELD

I need to contact Quinn Insurance for help!

- WHAT DO I DO? If the damage on your windshield is more like a knick, it may be able to be repaired without replacing your entire windshield. If you have Comprehensive coverage on your vehicle, you can get this repaired through your insurance and many companies will waive the deductible if it is just a repair. If you do not have this coverage, then you may be able to buy a DIY repair kit at an auto parts store. If the windshield needs to be replaced in its entirety, and you have Comprehensive coverage, you can get it replaced through your insurance company, but you will need to put up your deductible. We suggest to our customers to get an estimate on the windshield repalcment before they file a claim, especially if they have a higher deductible because it may not even be worth filing the claim if you have to put out most of the repair cost anyway. Any questions, call us. Have a great day!
